Very early stop in Broken Hill. On our way again looking at a rather bleak outback. Just dirt roads-glad we aren't driving. Riding through the outback - seeing sheep, birds, kangaroo and emu. In the afternoon the train stopped in Adelaide. We had time to walk into town - pretty quiet on a sunday. The Chinatown area was busy so we found a place for a beer before walking back to the station. All aboard! and off again.

First stop today was the ghost town of Cook where the train took on water while passengers looked around. Evenwith just 4 residents, they didn't miss an opportunity to sell souvenirs to the tourists. Continuing on the Nullarbor (no trees) Plain - its the longest stretch of strait track in the world. Saw a large hurd of camels.

Reached Perth in the morning. Got to the hotel, checked in the bags and walked around the city for 3 hours. Perth is a small city, clean, quiet, less rushed than Sydney. It has wonderful (free) public transportation that helps keep lots of cars out of thecity. There are lots of bike and pedestrian paths. Had a late lunch and shopped a bit.

Today we have a tour package for Rottnest Island. After trains, planes, and automobiles, today we took a ferry. We started with a short, guided walking tour, getting a brief history of the island. Saw quokkas for which the island is named (the discoverer thought they were large rats- Rats Nest-Rottnest). They are actually mini-kangaroo like marsupials. Next we boarded a bus for a tour all around the island - then lunch From there we were on our own (for a short 45 min,) before getting on the ferry. Back by 5 then shop, eat then pack for the long travel day tomorrow and the next day.
