Pacific Crest Trail Journal

I will start my Journey on April 15, 2009

4/15/09 16.2 miles; 3617' total elevation gain; end point Hauser Creek; Cool and very windy! Met a rooky thru- hiker -  no trail name yet. Met another thru-hiker -trail name is 12%. Border Patrol stopped and asked if I had seen any suspicious activity. Also gave me some water. The creek I planned to get water from was already dry. Wildlife seen was small snakes, lizards, and a rabbit.

4/16/09 15 miles;4587' total elevation gain; end point Kitchen Creek Road; Spent a VERY cold night but I was still up and on the trail by 6 AM. Animal life much the same. Met some day hikers. Met Karen at the end of the day. Will spend the next 4 days in San Diego.

4/20/09 2.4 miles; 820' total elevation gained; end point: Fred Canyon Rd. Hiked with Karen today before she heads back to Middleton, MA tomorrow. Met a lot of thru hikers. Met Splash- a thru hiker that got her name by falling in a creek. Got some advice from experienced thru hikers/section hikers- send some of the weight ahead- so plans are made to get to a post office to send the bear box up north to where it is required. There were some trucks coming and going on the road- unusual activity- probably the border patrol on the move (at 11PM). At 1:30 AM the illegals they were probably looking for walked by the site.

4/21/09 10.2 miles; 3337' total elevation gained; end point: Mt Laguna. Saw a swarm of bees fly by...in the middle of the day

4/22/09 20 miles; 4737' total elevation gained; end point: Upper Chariot Canyon. A lot of hikers today. Some trail magic- a nice fresh California orange among a few other things.

4/23/09 14.2 miles; 2688' of total elevation gained; end point: Caesars crossing. Got up very early to get to destination early. Attended the first Lions meeting of the journey- Julian Mountain Lions Club (Julian, CA).

message from the trail: 4/24/09 10:45 AM - "Scissors Crossing", State Route (S2) San Diego County, 12 miles
east of Julian, CA: "Back on the trail, heading north, after sleeping in a comfy
bed and having dinner the night before with the Julian Lions Club."

4/24/09 13.4 miles; 4803' of total elevation gained; end point: 3rd Pike Gate. Tough, desert hiking. Did not see anyone until getting in to camp. Saw lots of lizards.

4/25/09 17.4 miles; 3628' of total elevation gained; end point: 1 mile before highway 79. Only a few hikers today. VERY windy and very scary when going near the drop offs.

4/26/09 19.3 miles; 5273' of total elevation gained; end point: Chihuahua Valley Rd. Lots of hikers out today and the word on the trail was to get to this end point for the trail magic. So after a 13 hr day got to the delicious trail magic and ranch (which was camp for the night) It was below 32 with frost in the morning but very hot by the afternoon. Met some hikers from Mass. 65+5 (he hiked the AT when he was 65 in 2004) but couldn't keep up with him.

4/27/09 15.6 miles; 3855' of total elevation gained; end pont: Table Mtn Rd. 35 degrees when I got up, stayed 51 in the AM but got hot in the afternoon- too hot but that's the desert!

4/28/09 15.2 miles; 6493' of total elevation gained; end point: Wide Oak Trail. A lot of hikers again today. There was a pregnant hiker, 17 weeks, that was having problems and had to leave the trail. Met another hiker that likes mead and some mead will be shipped out here for him.

4/29/09 15.9 miles; 3296' of total elevation gained; end point: Forbes Saddle Rd. Came down to a water source that had dried up. Did not attempt the hike back up, way up, so walked down a 6 mile, unshaded, road to town. Others went back up and hit lots of snow and had trouble finding their way.

4/30/09 Zero day in Idyllwild, CA

5/1/09 10.6 miles; 4403' of total elevation gained; end point: White Water River. Skipped ahead a little- experienced hikers warned of the snow pack that is challenging even for experienced hikers.Went through a wind farm where there were 430 wind generators. Got a tour of the facility. It was soon after the wind farm that the cell phone may have taken an unplanned trip down a cliff.

5/2/09 12.4 miles; 5732' of total elevation gained; end point: few miles before Creek Side Camp. Was 1 step from stepping on a rattle snake. He rattled just in time. He scurried off into the bushes and continued to rattle. There was a creek that the trail kept crossing. Other hikers kept losing the trail. A bunch of us banded to gether and fanned out and made it down the stream to where we found the trail again.

Note: I have had to slow up a little due to breathing issues and allowing time for acclimation to the height.

5/3/09 10.4 miles; 5438' of total elevation gained; end point:CHRT trail. Saw another rattlesnake. Got to 8163' of elevation today! It continues to be very cold in the morning and very hot during the day.

5/4/09 13.6 miles; 4019' of total elevation gained; end point: Arrastre Trail Camp. Got to 8676' and stayed above 8000' today. Many hikers out. Lots of snowy patches but still very hot.

5/6/09 Zero day Going to Big Bear Lake to pick up mead- lots of hikers know me for my mead and now they can get a little taste. Going to KMart to get a new tracphone (see 5/1/09 about the phones 'journey')

5/7/09 Zero day- Went to the Big Bear City Lions Club meeting.

5/8/09 9.2 miles; 2462' of total elevation gained; end point: a little past Dusen Rd. A lot of hikers and they all passsed me. There were a few that were slack packing heading south. It was in the 30's last night and was very hot during the day. There was a rest stop with most of the water supply for horses and a handicap bathroom (4 walls and no roof)

5/9/09 17 miles; 2497' of total elevation gained; end point: Holcomb Creek. Overlooking Big Bear Lake from trail. There were some trees (finally) so I took off the long sleeves and changed the pants to shorts, put on some sunscreen and stated hiking in some wonderful shade. Not long after hiking in the trees there was a burnt out area which went on for the rest of the day. This area was burnt out from ~2 yrs. ago. It was a long hot hike.

5/10/09 15.4 miles; 2,812' of total elevation gained; end point: hot springs (not a town just an area with hot springs) After a long hot day of hiking the hot springs were a welcome treat for aching muscles. The trail was hot and shadeless. A few hundred feet down from the trail was a nice creek which was inaccessible to hikers... it just teased us all day long. Saw the Mojave Dam but there wasn't any water visible. A lot of hikers (probably a few dozen) camped at the hot springs.

5/11/09 16.8 miles; 2386' of total elevation gained; end point: near route 173. Long, hot day of hiking. There was a fjord that I thought was waist deep but was only thigh deep. Went for a swim then rested in the water for a bit which felt good.

5/13/09 7.6 miles; 3192' of total elevation gained; end point: 1 mile before Mt Boden Powell. Hot, uphill hike today. Up to an elevation of 9400'! Had to melt snow for water as there was no water source available for many miles. Tomorrow will bring a large amount of snow pack.

5/14/09 18.6 miles; 4234' of total elevation gained; end point: Sulthor Spring Camp. 14 hours of hiking!!! A lot of snow. Elevation- 9400'. We kept losing the trail so we would follow the footprints in the snow... and learned that those people didn't know where they were going either! We did find our way back to the trail. Got a ride to the Newcombs Ranch Restaurant and watched some of the Celt's game (missed the end of that game because the ride was going back to the campsite- perhaps a good thing to miss that ending!) Bruin's game was not televised there. Unfortunately I will not be able to see a Bruin's game again until next season.

5/15/09 14.8 miles; 3776' of total elevation gained; end point: 2 miles past Mill Creek Summit. Hot day with shady spots here and there. A few snakes in the trail. One of the hikers was handling a snake (not a rattler). He knows a lot about snakes. Had to carry some extra water for the last few miles to make sure there was enough for tomorrow.

5/16/09 19.9 miles; 2785' of total elevation gained; end point: Mattox Canyon Creek. At the ranger station we saw a fire starting, the rangers said it was 6 miles from the trail and it was only an acre. Soon after we saw the helicopter fly by and heard over the radio it was 6 acres. They got it under control pretty quick. At 6pm there was no water at the water source but 8pm the water was flowing through there so we were able to get some water for tomorrow.

Pictures have been uploaded onto the website!!! Please check them out on the following pages: Southern California, Creatures from the Trail, and Lions Club Visits.
