Appalachian Trail Journal
I will start my journey on April 12th at Springer Mtn. Georgia.
Unofficial first entry- 4/11/08- Around 5:00 PM Karen and Dick arrived in Atlanta, Georgia. In just over 12 hours the "journey" will begin! Check back on this page for "Mountain Lion's" "official" blog entries.
4/12/08- First official entry- Started at Springer Mtn and ended the day in Gooch Gap, GA. Miles: 16.3, Total elevation gained: 4000+ feet. Highlights: Meeting another hiker with the same back pack (minus the Lions patch). Oh yes, the hiker was hiking in a kilt! Check "AT Photos" in a few days for the picture.
4/13/08- 15.6 miles, ~5,000 feet of elevation gained, end point- Neel's Gap, GA. Highlights: met 2 hikers with unusual trail names- Rupneck and Crest.
4/14/08- 20 miles, 5,912 feet of elevation gained, end point- Unicoi Gap, GA. Highlights: saw a bear (Karen, too) on the way to today's start. He/she was coming from a trailer park (better their trash barrels than the hikers packs/tents!) Met another hiker- trail name Jeff, real name Joe. He attempted the hike a few years ago and a hiker in the group thought his name was Jeff and called out to him- he knew there was no Jeff in the group so he responded to the hiker. The name stuck but he got sick and he is attempting the trail again this year using Jeff as a trail name.
4/15/08- 16.1 miles, 5,945 feet of elevation gained, end point- Dick's Creek Gap, GA. Highlights: met some more hikers- Magnet, Bearrmeister, Wasabe, Frog, Wookie and JJ. No details on the stories behind the names.
4/16/08- 15.6 miles, 5,941 feet of elevation gained, end point- Deep Gap, NC (that is state #2!!! for those who are sponsoring by number of states). Highlights: met hikers Needles, Chris, Stranger and Chay.
4/17/08- HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! Today is an off day. Tomorrow brings the first day of hiking with the pack!!! Also, Karen will be flying back to Middleton.
4/18/08- 8.5 miles, 2,697 feet of elevation gained, end point- Carter Gap Shelter, NC. Highlights: met lots of hikers including Crutch and Becca. A day of firsts- first day with the pack (which is a little on the heavy side- but that will be worked on), first dehydrated meal and the first night in the tent. It was an exhausting day (started at 5:00 AM with breakfast).
4/19/08- 6.8 miles, total elevation gained 2739 feet, end point: Big Spring Shelter, NC. Highlights: Met hiker named Panther. Rougher and steeper terrain today.
4/20/08- 5.4 miles, total elevation gained 942 feet, end point: Rock Gap, NC. Highlights: very eventful day! Met 2 couples and their dogs (Shadow would be jealous) Walt and Joanne had 4 dogs snd Jack and Carole had their 2 golden retrievers, Ty and Jessie. Also met some hikers who mentioned a very nice motel owner, Ron Haven, from the town of Franklin who picks up hikers at 3 locations and brings them to town, whether they are staying at his motel (Haven Motel) or not. He also gives rides to the outfitter in town which will be utilized today. Items to be purchased at the outfitter to help lighten the pack- light weight rain gear and a small "filter pen" for water. Being shipped today is some dehydrated food to a stop a few weeks away, the heavy rain gear and the heavier filter back to Middleton. This should reduce the pack weight by several pounds. This afternoon was time for a shower and laundry.
4/21/08- Happy Patriot's Day and Marathon Monday! 8.4 miles, 2,952 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Siler Bald Shelter, NC. Highlights: Ron Haven provided a ride to the post office to ship off 9 lbs of stuff from the pack (unfortunately not the filter- Karen is out shopping for the filter "pen" today). The first stop back on the trail was ~4 miles north of today's start back at Rock Gap- the pack was left there with the people who hand out snacks and drinks to the hikers. Then it was to Rock Gap to walk the first half of today's mileage pack-free!!! Met up with Crest again, Sprint Wind and Creepy Uncle with his little dog.
4/22/08- 12.1 miles, 4,374 feet of elevation gained, end point: Cold Spring Shelter, NC. Highlights: Just before the final climb to the shelter Epp had some nice cold orange soda. Hung out with Donnie and Mike at their camp after todays hike.
4/23/08- 11.5 miles, 2,838 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) in Wesser, NC. Highlights: nothing today.
4/24/08- 6.9 miles, 3,799 feet of elevation gained, end point: Sassafrass Gap Shelter, NC. Highlights: Met some familiar faces- Crest, Slow Start and Taper Off. There is a possible story developing staring with a marriage proposal- Crutch said to Cruise Control (Becca) "If we make it to Katahdin we should get married."
4/25/08- 9.1 miles, 3,458 feet of elevation gained, end point: Brown Fork Gap Shelter, NC. Highlights: none today

4/29/08- 11 miles, 4,127 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Spence Field Shelter, NC. Highlights: heavy rains last night but everything was nice and dry in the tent. Good thing the cold temperature this morning- 18 degrees for a low overnight and 28 degrees at 9 AM- was not here before the rain!!! Dave was the journalist writing for Smokies Life magazine. Matt called and confirmed his offer for a place to stay and an IPA sampling in Erwin, TN.
Addendum- Met by Ridgerunners (volunteers who maintain the AT through the Great Smokey Mountain National Park) Bill and Sharon. The first question they asked ws "Do you have your permit?". There are very strict rules for hiking in the national forest. You must have a permit to hike. All hiker's except thru hiker's have to reserve a spot in the shelters. There is no tenting unless you are a thru hiker AND there is no room in the shelter.
4/30/08- 12 miles, 5,262 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Silers Bald Shelter. Highlights: 10 people were in the shelter but a few moved on so it wasn't overfilled. There were 4 girls- 3 from Canada and 1 from Australia, who are hiking the Smokies for a week, and a few others- no info on the trail names. Should be at Clingmans Dome tomorrow morning- the highest point on the AT- 6,643 feet!!! Hopefully there will be some amazing pictures from there.
5/1/08- 8.5 miles, 4,669 feet of total elvation gained, end point: Mt. Collins Shelter. Highlights: Tough hiking today but made it to Clingman's Dome- the highest point on theAT at 6,643 feet!!! 5/2/08- 5 miles (hit the 200 mile mark today), 1,335 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Gatlinburg, TN. Highlights: Lots of people settling in Gatlinburg to avoid the bad weather- thunder storms and heavy rain. Had dinner with Dehwahtle and joined some others for drinks- a local microbrewed pale ale.
5/3/08- "Zero Day" (a "no hiking" day)- Highlights: Stayed in Gatlinburg and went to the outfitter in town where the owner took a picture to put on the wall with the other pictures of thru hiker's who stopped there.
5/4/08- 10.8 miles, 3,533 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Peck's Corner Shelter, NC. Highlights: Good day of hiking after a late start (11 AM because that was the time of the ride to the trail from Gatlinburg,TN) Lots of people at the shelter including Dave the journalist for Smokies Life magazine.
5/5/08- Happy Cinco De Mayo! 13.3 miles, 3,668 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Crosby Knob Shelter, NC. Highlights: none today
5/6/08- 10.4 miles, 2,236 feet of total elevation gained (this was predominantly a downhill day- over 5,000 feet of decline) end point: Green Corner Rd. at Standing Bear Farm. Highlights: There were lots of people (over 20) at the hostel including Fat Jim, Landfill, Happy Camper and Zeek the Carpenter. Slept in the same bed that was used 2 days prior by a blind thru hiker, trail name 00. Hoping to catch up with and talk to him. The hostel was on the honor system at it's store. You write down what you take during your stay and pay when you leave.
5/7/08- 15.4 miles, 6,667 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Roaring Fork Shelter. Highlights: Long day of hiking, about 12 hrs!!! Ran out of water and couldn't find the next water stop. Caught up to Dan, Tim, and Chef. And now here is the "bear" story to go along with the bear picture on the AT photos page: "We got to the shelter late and there was a sign that read "The bear WILL come" and it did, while it was still daylight. We chased it off and hung the food bags. Later we returned and found the bear scoping things out and our food was resecured. Later, once it was dark, we heard branches breaking and we went out to see the bear with our food pulled down low! Dan went up the trree to hang it about 10 feet higher while I chased the bear down the road. As I was moving the bear along I saw lights ahead and realized there were 2 girls hanging their food where I was sending the bear. I stopped chasing him and headed up to the shelter. Later on the bear reurned to the shelter and clawed Tim's water bag, we could hear the water pouring out. After this we set up our own little alarm system using ropes on poles so that we had warning when our new "friend" returned to join us. In the morning we heard that all of the others had lost their food to the bear. I shared some of my food with them."
5/8/08- 18 miles, 4,364 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Hot Springs, NC. Highlights: Another long day of hiking. Arrived in Hot Springs and Dan offered his couch in his hotel room. Met 2 women at the bar and one was there celebrating her 40th birthday. They had many questions about hiking the AT and at the end of dinner they covered dinner and drinks which was greatly appreciated!
5/9/08 "Zero Day" as the District 33 (Massachusetts) Lions Convention kicks off back home! Rainy day in Hot Springs so time to do laundry, pick up mail, and try once again to get online to check e-mail and upload pictures. Dan was trying to set up his tracphone. The rain finally stopped by mid-day but the next shelter was too far to start out to.
5/10/08- 17miles, 5,594 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Log Cabin Dr., NC. Highlights: Hiked and stayed in the hostel with Dan.
5/11/08- Happy Mother's Day. 16 miles (hit 300 miles today), 5,337 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Flint Mountain Shelter. Highlights: Rainy day and the rain gear didn't handle the rain. The shelter was full so it was a night in the tent which was the better option.
5/12/08- 11.2 miles, 4,862 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Sam's Gap, NC. Highlights: Stayed at Matt's house and tried some good homebrewed IPA. Got to dry out things from yesterday.

5/17/08- 16.2 miles, 5,971 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Applehouse Shelter. Highlights: It was 36 degrees this morning and thanks to an early Father's Day present (a light weight, very warm shirt) it wasn't too bad. Ate the rest of the snacks for breakfast. A lot of hikers out today- mostly day hikers and a lot of boy scouts. Met 4 people and talked to them for a while and gave them a card and in return was a nice, fresh apple. Reached the shelter by 8PM and Dan and Animal were there.
5/18/08- 9.2 miles, 2,792 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Mountaineering Shelter. Highlights: Met a father and daughter travelling southbound. Last year the daughter, Jessie, hiked 1,500 miles before breaking her leg and she is back to finish the hike. They received a card to give to Zero Zero who is now a day or 2 behind.
5/19/08- 15.6 miles, 4,771 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Dennis Cove Road. Highlights: Met a single and 2 southbounders today. The single got sick on the hike last year and is finishing the hike this year.

5/23/08- "Zero Day" Spent the day in Damascus. Got a properly fitted backpack (smaller size) which should feel a little more comfortable. And everything fits into it perfectly!
5/24/08- 16 miles, 4,409 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Creek Junction Station. Highlights: After spending close to 4 hours in Mount Roger Outfitters in Damascus, VA with incredible staff that correclty fit the bacpack (which was 2 sizes smaller than the original one) this was the first day of hiking with the backpack that there was NO back pain!!! The old backpack was mailed to Middleton after the Lions patch was removed and sewn onto the new backpack. Well the problems continued- not making the next shelter it was decided to camp out at Creek Junction Station. While putting up the tent it broke. To add insult to injury it broke in the same spot that the originally purchased tent broke. So this is the second tent to break in the same spot- don't think that brand will be purchased again! Fortunately it was a dry night and the plan is to back track to Damascus for a replacement tent.
5/25/08- 2.3 miles, 1,099 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Lost Mountain Shelter, VA. Highlights: The trek back to Damascus was only 10 miles on the Virginia Creeper Trail. A new one man tent was purchased- a Hubba (the 2 man tent is called the Hubba Hubba). A worker from the outfitter saved the hike back to todays start point and drove up to Creek Junction Station! (so today's true total hiked is 12.3, 2.3 is the total progress made on the AT) A much appreciated ride!

The intended endpoint is Pine Grove Campground and there will be the opportunity to join the "half gallon club"- eating a half gallon of ice cream to mark the halfway point. The record stands at 4 min. 14 sec. Report will be posted once the brain freeze wears off! :-)
7/6/08- OFFICIALLY HALFWAY!!! 17.3 miles, 2,688 feet of total elevation gained, end point: Pine Grove Furnace State Park Campground. Highlights: Just shy of the end point it started to pour buckets and had to stop until it passed. Got into Pine Grove Campground to find out that a local media person had just left- they were looking to do a story on the "half gallon challenge". There had not been any hikers in to do the challenge until I arrived. The woman in the store called the person that had been there and gave him my name. Completed the challenge and now a member of the "half gallon club". There was limited choices for ice cream but I enjoyed a nice cherry jubilee which was finished in 57 minutes. Not much for wildlife today- just a few rabbits. The shelters were nicer than most that have been encountered on the trail.
